This viral dumpling lasagna, also called viral pork dumpling lasagna or viral soup dumpling lasagna, is a fun way to enjoy classic dumplings without folding a single one!

Baked dumpling lasagna in a blue dish, topped with chili oil, chives, and sesame seeds

It's basically Chinese lasagna, layered with dumpling fillings and baked until the wrappers turn soft and steamy. I saw this trend popping up everywhere and had to try it, and after a couple of rounds tweaking the filling and the water-bath timing, this is the version that actually works. One of the best food trends I've tried, and perfect for easy weeknight dinners!

Ingredients Notes

A dish of dumpling lasagna with wonton wrapper layers, chili crisp, sesame seeds, and chives
  • Wrappers: round or square wonton wrappers both work here, just layer them like lasagna sheets. You'll need about 27 for a 7×9 dish.
  • Ground pork: ground chicken or turkey both work, and it's easily made vegetarian, swap the pork for soy curls or crumbles (one reader did exactly that and loved it).

Ingredients Equipment Method Notes

Ingredients

Meat Filling
  • 500 g ground pork
  • 5 spring onions finely sliced
  • 3 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 inch piece ginger minced (optional)
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon chicken bouillon powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon chili sauce I use Kai Dong, optional
Dumpling Layers
  • 27 dumpling wrappers round or square
  • ½ cup hot water
Toppings (to serve)
  • Chili oil
  • Soy sauce
  • Smooth peanut butter
  • Chives finely sliced
  • Sesame seeds

Equipment

  • Cutting Board
  • Baking Dish 7×9-inch, 3-inch-deep
  • Larger Baking Dish for the water bath
  • Large Bowl

Method

  1. Make the filling: In a large bowl, combine the ground pork, spring onions, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, sugar, chicken bouillon, garlic powder, and chili sauce. Mix well until the mixture looks smooth and slightly sticky. (WATCH VIDEO BELOW)
  2. Assemble the lasagna: Lightly grease a 7×9-inch, 3-inch-deep heatproof dish. Spread about ¼ of the meat mixture evenly over the bottom.
Arrange 6 dumpling wrappers on top with minimal overlap, like lasagna sheets. Gently press them down so they stick.
  3. Repeat the layers: Add another layer of meat, then wrappers, repeating until you’ve used everything, finishing with a layer of wrappers on top. (Double layer of wontons on top!)
  4. Add water + steam bake: Carefully pour the hot water over the dumplings. Place the dish into a larger baking pan and pour boiling waterinto the outer pan until it reaches halfway up the sides of the dumpling dish.
Cover tightly with foil or a lid.
  5. Bake: Bake at 400°F (205°C) for 30–40 minutes, checking at the 30-minute mark. Bake time may vary depending on how insulated your bakeware is—the wrappers should be soft, wrinkly, and fully cooked.
  6. Finish & serve: Once baked, drizzle generously with soy sauce, peanut butter, chili oil, and finish with chives and sesame seeds. Serve hot and enjoy. (WATCH VIDEO BELOW)

Notes

How to Store:

  • Fridge: airtight container up to 3 days. Reheat covered with a splash of water to re-steam the wrappers.
  • Not freezer-friendly, the wrappers lose their texture once frozen and thawed.
Press the wrappers gently into the filling so the layers stay put and don't shift while baking.
Pour the water around the edges, not on top, so you don't wash the seasoning off the surface.
Keep the dish tightly covered. The trapped steam is what actually cooks the wrappers, if it's not sealed, they'll dry out instead of turning soft and wrinkly.
Want individual portions? Bake in ramekins for personal-size dumpling lasagnas.

Frequently Asked Question for Easy Viral Dumpling Lasagna Recipe

Can I make this ahead?
Yes. Assemble, cover, refrigerate, and add hot water right before baking.

Why didn't my water bubble?
Heavy bakeware and dense layers insulate heat. Even without visible bubbling, steam still cooks the dumplings.

Is this the same as soup dumplings?
It's inspired by them. This viral soup dumpling lasagna gives you similar textures and flavors without the work.

Can I make it vegetarian?
Definitely. Swap the ground pork for soy curls or plant-based crumbles, and use a vegetarian chili sauce. One reader made it this way with gochujang and miso and loved it.

Loved this! I made this vegetarian with soy curls/crumbles instead and also subbed gochujang for chili sauce and miso for soy sauce; I added in half a head of cabbage for some fiber. I've already made it twice in the past month, so thank you for this recipe 🙂
