Ingredients

  • Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
  • Unsalted Butter
  • Eggs
  • Granulated Sugar
  • Pure Vanilla Extract
  • Fine Sea Salt
  • All-Purpose Flour
  • Vanilla Ice Cream (optional, but highly recommended)

See recipe card for quantities.

Instructions

  1. Add ingredients to a bowl & mix.

2. Add in the melted chocolate butter mixture.

3. Mix well & add to oven safe ramekins.

4. Bake & serve with ice cream.

  1. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Melt Chocolate and Butter: In a pan or using the microwave in small increments, melt the chocolate chips and butter together, stirring constantly until smooth.
  3. Prepare Wet Ingredients: In a small bowl, whisk together the egg, egg yolk, sugar, vanilla, and salt until well combined.
  4. Combine Ingredients: Add the flour to the wet ingredients and whisk to reduce clumps. Gently fold in the melted chocolate mixture until fully incorporated.
  5. Pour Batter: Pour the batter into a greased, oven-safe dish. A 4 ½-inch-wide ramekin works well. You can also divide the batter into two smaller dishes, but note that the baking time will be shorter.
  6. Bake: Place in the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the top is just set. Be careful not to overbake.
  7. Serve: Top with a scoop of ice cream and enjoy your delicious dessert!

Tip: Keep a close eye on the cake while baking to ensure a perfect gooey center.

FAQ

What is a fun fact about lava cake?

A fun fact about lava cake is that it was accidentally invented by renowned French chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten in 1987. He pulled a chocolate sponge cake out of the oven too early, discovering that the undercooked center created a delicious, gooey core that became the signature feature of the dessert!

This tasted awesome omg but I will say the only reason I didn’t give 5 stars is because the cleaning of 3 dirty dishes and various utensils made me want to d*e. But for something that was otherwise so less effort, the end product was phenomenal!
