Instructions for Smashed Burger Tacos
- Prepare the Beef: Divide the ground beef into 2 ½ ounce portions
- Step 2: Smash into tortillas.
- Step 3: Cook face down for 2-3 minutes.
- Step 4: Flip carefully with a spatula.
- Step 5: Add cheese & cook for another 2 minutes.
- Step 6: Assemble and serve!
- Prepare the Beef: Divide the ground beef into 2 ½ ounce portions and gently roll them into balls. Avoid overhandling the meat to keep the patties tender.
- Preheat the Flat Top: Set your flat top or griddle to high heat, keeping it ungreased. This step is crucial for achieving crispy, juicy beef. If you're using a pan, add 1 tablespoon of oil.
- Smash the Tacos: Press the beef onto each tortilla & place face down onto flattop or pan. Use a heavy-duty smashing tool to press the meat down firmly, flattening it as much as possible under the tortilla. Let it cook for 1 minute, then press down again to release some fat, which will help the edges crisp up. Continue cooking for another 2-3 minutes without disturbing.
- Check for Crispiness: Using a stiff steel spatula, carefully scrape underneath one of the patties to check if it's browned and crispy. If not, increase the heat to ensure the grill is smoking hot. Once browned and crisp, flip the smash burger tacos so the tortilla side is on the grill. Now sprinkle about ½ a teaspoon of salt & cook for an additional 2 minutes, allowing the tortilla to crisp up. Top with a slice of Muenster cheese, letting it melt as the tortilla finishes crisping.
- Serve: Remove the smash tacos from the grill, add your desired toppings like mayonnaise, and enjoy!

Storage
Store any leftover Smash Tacos in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. To reheat, place them on a hot skillet or griddle until warmed through and crispy. Avoid microwaving as it may make the tortillas soggy. Add fresh toppings after reheating for the best taste.
3 Top tips for Success
- Use High Heat for a Perfect Crisp:
Ensure your flat top or griddle is smoking hot before adding the beef. High heat is essential for creating that crispy, caramelized crust on the meat while keeping it juicy inside. - Smash Immediately and Firmly:
When you place the tortilla on top of the beef ball, use a sturdy smasher to press down immediately and with firm pressure. This ensures the beef spreads thinly and evenly under the tortilla, which helps it cook quickly and achieve maximum crispiness. - Don’t Overhandle the Beef:
Handle the ground beef as little as possible when forming the balls. Overworking the meat can make the patties tough. Gentle handling keeps the texture tender and juicy.
FAQ
Smash burgers are done when they have a deep, crispy brown crust and the meat is no longer pink, usually after 2-3 minutes on high heat. You can also check for an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) to ensure they are fully cooked.
