Substitutions

Egg Yolks:

  • For a vegan option, make a flaxseed egg (combine 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed with 3 tablespoon of water).
  • Alternatively, you can use commercial egg replacers according to package instructions.

White Sugar:

  • Substitute with brown sugar, coconut sugar, or maple syrup for a different flavor profile.
  • Adjust the quantity based on sweetness preference.

Heavy Cream:

  • Replace with coconut cream for a dairy-free alternative.
  • Alternatively, use whipped aquafaba (the liquid from canned chickpeas) for a vegan option.

Mascarpone Cheese:

  • Blend together equal parts of cream cheese and sour cream for a similar tangy flavor and creamy texture.
  • Alternatively, use vegan option of mascarpone cheese or a vegan cream cheese.

Vanilla Extract:

  • Substitute with almond extract or maple extract for a unique flavor twist.
  • Alternatively, use scraped vanilla beans for a more intense vanilla flavor.

Ladyfingers:

  • Replace with slices of sponge cake, graham crackers, or even shortbread cookies for a different texture.
  • Adjust soaking time accordingly to prevent the alternative from becoming too soggy.

Cold Espresso/Coffee:

  • Substitute with cold brew coffee or strongly brewed coffee cooled to room temperature.
  • Alternatively, use a coffee-flavored liquor such as Baileys.

Brown Sugar:

  • Replace with granulated sugar, honey, or maple syrup for sweetness.
  • Adjust the quantity based on sweetness preference and the desired flavor profile.

Equipment

  • 2 Medium Sized Bowls
  • Shallow Bowl/Dish

Storage for Tiramisu Cups

Storage: When storing Tiramisu cover the cups or baking dish tightly with plastic wrap or transfer to an airtight container to prevent air exposure and maintain freshness.

Refrigeration: Refrigerate the tiramisu cups for up to 3-4 days. Beyond this, the texture may start to degrade, and flavors could diminish.

Top Tips for Success!

1. Soak Ladyfingers Just Right: Dip the ladyfingers into the espresso mixture for just a few seconds. They should be soaked enough to absorb the flavor without becoming soggy. Over-soaking can lead to a mushy texture, so be mindful of the time they spend in the espresso mixture.

2. Maintain Fluffy Texture: When combining the mascarpone cream with the whipped cream, fold gently to maintain the airy and fluffy texture. Overmixing can deflate the mixture, resulting in a denser filling. Take care to fold until just combined for a light and creamy result.

3. Chill for Optimal Flavor: Refrigerate the assembled tiramisu cups for at least 6-8 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld and the dessert to set properly. This chilling time enhances the taste and texture, resulting in a more delicious and cohesive dessert when served.

FAQ's for Tiramisu Cups

Can I make tiramisu cups in advance?

Yes, tiramisu cups can be made in advance. In fact, it's often recommended to allow them to chill in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours, or overnight, to set and allow the flavors to meld together. Making them ahead of time also gives you more flexibility when planning for gatherings or special occasions.

Can I use something other than ladyfingers?

While ladyfingers are traditional for tiramisu, you can certainly experiment with other types of biscuits or cake. Sponge cake or pound cake slices are common alternatives. Just be sure to adjust the soaking time accordingly to prevent them from becoming too soggy.

Can I make tiramisu cups without alcohol?

Yes, you can make tiramisu cups without alcohol. Simply omit the alcohol from the espresso mixture or use a non-alcoholic substitute such as coffee-flavored syrup or additional espresso. Tiramisu will still be delicious without the alcohol, though it may have a slightly different flavor profile.
